In 2010, Arizona passed a law called The Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, which was designate Arizona Senate Bill 1070, or simply SB 1070.

SB170 received both national and international attention and has spurred considerable controversy. The day before the law was to take effect, the Federal Government got a federal judge to issue a preliminary injunction that blocked the law's most controversial provisions.

That injunction was then supported by the Ninth Circuit court. Arizona is appealing to the Supreme Court to overturn that decision.

Attorney Paul Clement makes the argument on behalf of Arizona, and Solicitor General Donald Verilli argues the case on behalf of the federal government. Eight members of the Supreme Court heard the arguments and peppered the attorneys with questions. Justice Sonia Sotomayor even challenged the Federal Government to come up with a better argument, at one point she tells General Verilli “You can see this is not selling very well. Why don’t you try to come up with something else?”

Will they rule for it or against it? Listen and decide for yourself.
